Wintergreen is both a stimulating and soothing oil, with anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. It is distilled mostly from the leaves of the plant, though some will distill it from the bark as well. The purest form of this oil comes from the leaves and produces 97% methyl-salicylate, the same compound that is used in the production as the active ingredient of Aspirin. However, though it is derived from the same compound, the harmful effects that can be experienced with Aspirin are not present in the Wintergreen oil.
Wintergreen is most commonly applied topically, as it has a nice warming effect to help soothe sore muscles, arthritis, joint pain and similar afflictions. However, since wintergreen is highly concentrated, it should be used sparingly. Wintergreen is one of the main ingredients found in some of the doTERRA blends such as In Tune and Deep Blue. Both of which have proven effective in dealing with migraines, headaches and muscle aches much quicker than any pain reliever I’ve taken. It smells awesome and works fast. Love it!
